"It is loneliness that makes the loudest noise. This is true of men as of dogs." The feeling of loneliness has a big impact on the book Of Mice and Men, and has everyone but one person suffers from it. There are three people who really stood out from this to me in the book; Crooks, Curly's Wife, and Candy.
The person who made the loudest noise to me was Crooks. "Come on in and set a while," Crooks said, "Long s you won't get and leave me alone, you might as well set down." pg.69. This quote from the book really shows that he does not want to admit it, but he is extremely lonely. Not only does everyone else not talk to him a lot but they have a separate bunk house for him. Crooks rarely get to talk to anyone and if he does it is mainly just giving him orders on what to do.
For Curly's Wife not only is she rarely talked to, but the author wanted to show how lonely she is and didn't give her a name. "What kinda harm am I doin' to you? Seems like they ain't none of them cares how I got to live." Pg.88. This is partly true what she said, because if they were a lot to talk to her the other men would. Sadly, Curly knows that she has a wondering eye and doesn't let her talk to any of the men without him getting mad at them. This tells us that she doesn't have much of a chose and almost has to be lonely as long as she lives at the ranch with Curly. Before George and Lennie showed up at the ranch, Candy had no dream. Then as soon as Candy got the chance of getting out and living a better life, he sprung on it as fast as he could. "Jus' as soon as I can't swamp out no bunk houses they'll put me on the county." pg.60. He feels that not a lots of people care for him even if they do. Also, that he has no use at the ranch for anyone.
All in all, on the ranch loneliness has a big part on the people there. Three of the people feel it the most and are trying to look for a dream. "It is loneliness that makes the loudest noise. This is true of men as of dogs."
